1. Response Time Testing (25% of Score)

We make 20 test calls per system – 10 during business hours and 10 during nights/weekends. We measure the exact time from button press to operator greeting. Testing is done from multiple locations to account for cellular signal variation. Systems are tested over a 2-week period to capture any time-of-day or day-of-week variation. Average response times in our testing: Medical Guardian (8 sec), LifeStation (10 sec), Aloe Care (11 sec), Bay Alarm (12 sec), Lifeline (13 sec), MobileHelp (15 sec), Lively (16 sec).

2. Monitoring Center Quality (20%)

We verify monitoring certifications directly with the TMA, CSAA, and UL – not just company claims. We evaluate operator training: Do they have your medical information ready? Do they stay on the line until help arrives? Are they calm and professional? We check for redundant monitoring centers (backup centers if the primary fails) and test failover during simulated outages. 3. Device Quality & Durability (15%)

We physically test every device: drop testing from 4 feet onto hardwood (simulating a fall), water resistance testing (shower simulation), button press force measurement, speaker volume and clarity testing at multiple distances, pendant comfort for 8+ hours of continuous wear, and base station build quality assessment. Devices that feel flimsy, have hard-to-press buttons, or produce unclear audio are penalized.

4. Range & Connectivity (15%)

In-home range: We test from the base station outward in 100-foot increments until the pendant loses connection. Tested in a single-family home (wood frame) and an apartment (concrete/steel). Cellular signal: We test with both AT&T and Verizon SIMs in urban, suburban, and rural locations. GPS accuracy: We measure location accuracy outdoors and indoors, comparing GPS-only vs GPS+WiFi systems. Medical Guardian and MobileHelp offer 1,400 ft range – the best in testing. LifeStation does not publish an in-home range in the workbook, so we avoid quoting one here.

5. Ease of Use (10%)
